Hospital Design Trends/Design Organization
A good example of a hospital that strives for a environment that serves it purpose but also provides a great environment is Cherry Hospital located in North Carolina. The architects of this hospital was Perkins and Will. In the article about this hospital they said that it was important to the hospital that they have a place that was workable but also provided dignity and safety to the psychiatric patience. They achieved this by using: material, scale, daylight, and modulation of spatial conditions.
They way that they arranged there buildings was very unique. They wanted it to mimic a town to give the hospital a sense of community. Patient rooms were like neighbor hoods, treatment areas were civic buildings, and there recreational program was like shops on a main street. Through out all these areas they have many courtyards as well. I believe this hospital is a great example of the designers taking into account what would make the patient feel comfortably in a area that is usually very uncomfortable.
